The Danish West Indies (Danish: Dansk Vestindien or De dansk-vestindiske øer) or "Danish Antilles", were a colony of Denmark-Norway in the Caribbean. They were sold to the United States in 1916 in the Treaty of the Danish West Indies and became the United States Virgin Islands in 1917. Jomfruøerne ("Virgin Islands") is the Danish geographic name for the Virgin Islands.
They covered a total area of 185 square miles (479 km2) and in the 1850s consisted of three islands—St. Thomas at 43 square miles (or 111 kilometres2); St. John 42 sq. miles (108 km2) and Santa Cruz of 100 sq. miles (259 km2).

The treaty was signed on August 4, 1916, at the Biltmore Hotel in New York City by Danish Minister Constantin Brun and Secretary of State Robert Lansing.[1] The U.S. Senate approved the treaty on September 7, 1916. A Danish referendum was held on 14 December 1916, and on 22 December the Danish parliament ratified the treaty.[2] The President ratified the treaty on January 16, 1917. Ratifications of the treaty were formally exchanged in Washington, D.C. on January 17, 1917. On 25 January 1917, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation on the treaty, and on 9 March 1917 Christian X of Denmark also issued a proclamation.
