The Treaty of the Danish West Indies, officially the Convention between the United States and Denmark for cession of the Danish West Indies,[1] was a 1916 treaty between Denmark and the United States transferring sovereignty of the Danish West Indies to the U.S., which were renamed as the United States Virgin Islands.
The treaty was signed on August 4, 1916, at the Biltmore Hotel in New York City by Danish Minister Constantin Brun and Secretary of State Robert Lansing.[1] The U.S. Senate approved the treaty on September 7, 1916. A Danish referendum was held on 14 December 1916, and on 22 December the Danish parliament ratified the treaty.[2] The President ratified the treaty on January 16, 1917. Ratifications of the treaty were formally exchanged in Washington, D.C. on January 17, 1917. On 25 January 1917, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation on the treaty, and on 9 March 1917 Christian X of Denmark also issued a proclamation.
On 31 March 1917 in Washington, D.C. a warrant for twenty five million dollars was presented to Danish Minister Constatine Brun by Secretary of State Robert Lansing. On 1 April the formal transfer of the islands took place, only five days before the United States declared war on Germany in World War I.[2]
